Xuan He (贺 玄)He Xuan is a ghost of Supreme rank and one of the Four Great Calamities. He is a powerful water demon that emerged from the Kiln by devouring all ghosts within. Despite reaching Supreme level, he rarely comes out to cause trouble and keeps a low-profile. Very few people have seen him before, therefore, he’s of little concern. His base is the Black Water Demon Lair, which is guarded by his giant skeleton fish.He Xuan was born into a family in the pit of poverty, commonly referred to as Scholar He in his mortal life. He had always been intelligent and talented, known everywhere as a good son. He studied hard and eventually took part in the national exam. Even though he had such a bright mind, he constantly failed the national exam because the examiners were offended that he didn't bring them any gifts and so they hid his test scrolls to exchange them for blank ones. For years he couldn't land a rank due to this. He was fated to ascend to the Heavenly Court but The Water Master Shi Wudu greatly altered his destiny. Shi Wudu's younger brother Shi Qingxuan was cursed by a Reverend of Empty Words shortly after his birth, who latched on the baby and cursed him to have a wretched beginning and end. Their parents consulted a fortune-teller who advised them to pretend to give Shi Qingxuan away to another family and disguise him as a kept daughter before bringing him back in. The Shi family complied and raised Shi Qingxuan as a girl to confuse the Reverend. During the first ten years of his life, the Shi family gradually declined and internal conflict rose over inheritance after the death of their parents when Shi Qingxuan turned ten. To escape these familial conflicts, Shi Wudu took his little brother to leave the house, and they began living depending on each other. Shi Wudu began cultivating under a master in a mountain and settled Shi Qingxuan in a town on the foot of the mountain. One day Shi Wudu forgot the time and didn't come home for dinner so Shi Qingxuan took the food up the mountain. On the way, he needed to relieve himself on the side of the road after the long walk. The Reverend appeared and asked him about his identity and after Shi Qingxuan confirmed his name and birthday, the Reverend attacked him. After that, the two brothers lived under the terror of the Reverend for years, who played around with Shi Qingxuan like a hunter would its prey. But the brothers' luck turned when Shi Wudu finally ascended as a Heavenly Official. Without the knowledge of Shi Qingxuan, Shi Wudu found a mortal of the same name and birthday who incidentally was fated to ascend. This man was He Xuan, who took the misfortune that was supposed to be Shi Qingxuan's and suffered to death, meanwhile, Shi Qingxuan unwittingly usurped his luck and successfully ascended. He got engaged to his childhood friend who was beautiful and kind, but both his fiancée and little sister got kidnapped by a rich household to become concubines. One wouldn't obey and was beaten to death, the other couldn't bear it and took her own life. He Xuan went to the household to fight them but got jailed for two years and almost died of starvation instead. During the two years, his elderly mother died because there was no one to take care of her and his father had to work hard in his old age to support the family. He Xuan abandoned his dream to become a scholar and started a business to support his aging father, but he was such a good merchant that he made his competitors jealous. They took everything he had and left him in a string of debts. One day before the last day of autumn, He Xuan took up weapons and butchered everyone who hurt him. These people have bullied the weaker citizens for a long time, and so they cheered him on. After killing everyone he succumbed to his injuries and died. Following his death, his hometown began the tradition of the Bloody Fire Social to honor him and ask for his protection against villains. The Fire Social includes a procession with people dressed up as a victim of an incredibly violent murder and a play reenacting He Xuan's murder. He spent 12 years inside Tonglu Mountain devouring all kinds of ghosts before he finally broke out and became a ghost king. After becoming a Supreme, he kidnapped the new Earth Master, Ming Yi sometime between his calamity and ascension and began impersonating him. To not let anyone notice his true identity, he continued his duty as a Heavenly Official, managing to keep an excellent reputation and status. While pretending to be Ming Yi, he is quiet and rarely makes his presence known. He is a loner who prefers to be by himself, Shi Qingxuan being the only one that is close with him, so He Xuan is almost always seen beside him in his disguise as Ming Yi. While he was neither social nor friendly, he managed to act well enough and keep a good reputation as a god so that people couldn't tell his real identity. However, even while acting as Ming Yi, he would occasionally slip into a habit of over or under eating, due to the negative effects his starvation in prison during his human years had on him. While his persona as a human is largely unknown, he seems to have been a kind, devoted filial man who worked hard and cared greatly for his loved ones. His ability to adapt to every horrible outcome that happened to him and try to overcome them with his abilities, talents, and hard work shows a dedicated man who did his best to persevere in the face of tragedy, including the loss of his loved ones. However, eventually, he changed as he did ultimately seek to murder those that wronged him. Later, he would devour the Reverend of Empty Words that had cursed him to such a fate. Upon finding out that it was Shi Wudu's doing by switching his fate with Shi Qingxuan's fate, he decided to pay them back for what they had done. He would go so far as to fake his identity as the god Ming Yi in order to get close to the brothers and exact his vengeance. His revenge reveals a patient man capable of masking his hatred while waiting for the right time to strike and also someone who is capable of holding deep grudges, albeit only to those who have wronged him. Despite his seemingly cold, merciless behavior towards the brothers, he does understand their involvement in it was different and granted Shi Qingxuan chances to escape misfortune. Aside from his strong will and intelligence, not too much is known of his current personality. He seems to prefer being alone and doesn't interact with others often, being under the radar and avoiding attention. Notably, despite being considered one of the Four Calamities, the Heavens rarely paid attention to him as he never caused much harm or damage, implying that while not a benevolent person, he is not evil and doesn't go out of his way to harm others. He Xuan is also the type to pay back what is owed, as he helped out the gods and the human array during the final battle because he owed Hua Cheng a massive debt.
